Hong Ji-seon, the nominee to become South Korea's minister of land, infrastructure and transport, faces a National Assembly confirmation hearing on September 16 with housing policy and his own apartment purchase likely to dominate scrutiny. The Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee is scheduled to open the hearing at 10 a.m.

Ahead of the session, the committee requested 2,643 documents from 86 institutions. Lawmakers are expected to examine Hong's acquisition of an apartment in Sindorim, his asset formation and previous housing-related statements. Policy questions are also likely to cover the much larger portfolio he would inherit, including housing supply in the Seoul metropolitan area, unsold homes outside the capital and transport policy.

The hearing is a test of both personal disclosure and policy capacity, not a final judgment on the government's housing program. Hong will have to explain how his own property decisions fit with the standards he would apply as minister while also showing a workable response to supply and regional-market pressures. The clearest new information should come from his answers and any additional documents presented during the hearing itself.
