An Incheon court has acquitted a YouTuber charged with defamation over allegations made about Lee Jae-myung's local-currency program during his time as Seongnam mayor. The defendant had claimed that Lee used the program to create a slush fund.
The court did not rule that the underlying allegation was true. According to Korean reporting, it focused on the context in which the statements were made and found that the defendant was discussing information connected to scrutiny of a public figure who was then considered a major presidential contender.
That distinction is central to the judgment. Defamation cases can turn on both factual claims and whether publication serves a public-interest purpose, especially when the subject is a public official or political figure.
The ruling is a first-instance court decision and may still be appealed. Its broader relevance will depend on the written reasoning and whether higher courts uphold the balance the trial court drew between reputational protection and political scrutiny.
