Newly elected local officials in Daegu and North Gyeongsang have filed fresh asset disclosures following the June 3 local elections, revealing large differences in reported wealth.

In Daegu, 154 senior officials covered by the disclosure system reported average assets of 1.051 billion won. Daegu Mayor Choo Kyung-ho reported 4.281 billion won, while other district chiefs and city council members showed a wide range of holdings in property, vehicles, deposits and securities.

The most striking figure came from Bonghwa County Mayor Choi Ki-young. He reported assets of about 34.92 billion won, the highest among newly registered local-government heads nationwide. That was far above both the average for newly registered district heads and the roughly 7.2 billion won he reported during the election campaign.

Reporting on the disclosure attributes much of the increase to the valuation of unlisted shares. Asset declarations can change substantially depending on valuation rules and the timing of reporting, so the headline difference does not by itself establish wrongdoing. The disclosure system instead provides a public record that can be compared with earlier filings and reviewed for consistency.
