Gang Sun-woo, an independent lawmaker, was sentenced to two years and six months in prison and detained in court after being convicted in the first trial of accepting 100 million won in exchange for a city council nomination. Seoul Central District Courtโs Criminal Division 1 found all of the charges proven and rejected her argument that the alleged payment was solely a staff memberโs unauthorized act.
The court said the money-for-nomination transaction undermined public trust in the electoral system. Kim Kyung-eun, who was accused of handing over the money, was sentenced to one year, while Gang continued to deny receiving any money after the verdict.
