A special counsel team investigating allegations involving South Korea’s National Election Commission will inspect about 2.47 million ballots and related CCTV footage at Seoul’s Olympic Park on October 28. The review will examine possible discrepancies in ballot counts, forged ballots, signs of outside intrusion, and hacking or errors involving ballot-sorting equipment. Police, forensic investigators, election officials, lawmakers and journalists are expected to observe the process, while the team says election officials will provide assistance rather than control the inspection.

The operation is an investigative review rather than a recount and therefore is not expected to change the existing election result, although any irregularities could expand the follow-up inquiry.
