The Korean National Police Agency has issued a nationwide 10-day special discipline alert after a series of misconduct cases and failures in handling serious investigations. From Aug. 28 through Sept. 6, officers are being told to avoid drinking, group dinners are banned and nonessential events should be postponed. Local police stations and mobile units are also required to hold daily meetings led by their commanders, while inspections and prevention training are being intensified.
The unusually broad response has triggered criticism from the National Police Workplace Council, which argues that misconduct should be punished at the individual and supervisory level rather than through collective restrictions on all officers. That dispute creates a second test for police leadership: restoring public trust without making rank-and-file officers feel that organizational failures are being answered mainly with symbolic blanket controls.
