Jeju police have identified 25 additional cases during a review prompted by an officer accused of falsely closing a missing-person report. At a briefing, Jeju Provincial Police said the officer described workload pressure as a factor in the false closure, according to Maeil Shinmun.
The officer reportedly said he had treated the missing adult case too casually and felt burdened by the additional tasks involved when a case remained unresolved or had to be handed over. Five profilers who took part in the investigation also identified accumulated workload and fatigue linked to growing responsibility as a central background factor.
Why workload became part of the investigation
That explanation does not excuse a false closure, but it matters for the institutional response. If the review shows similar procedural failures across more cases, the issue will extend beyond one officer’s conduct to supervision, workload management and the safeguards around closing missing-person reports. The next step is therefore not only the prosecution of the individual case, but also the result of the review into the 25 additional files and any changes police make to prevent unsupported closures.
