Daegu has recorded 65 fires linked to candles and incense from 2022 through August this year, highlighting a recurring household fire risk from small unattended flames. Seven people were injured in the incidents, while reported property damage totaled about 170 million won.

The pattern has worsened this year. Fifteen related fires occurred between January and August, up 25 percent from the same period last year. Residential properties accounted for 40 of the 65 cases, or 61.5 percent, showing that the risk is concentrated in homes.

The practical safety question

Fire officials are emphasizing a simple precaution: extinguish candles and incense before leaving the room or home. The recent increase makes that message more urgent because these incidents are generally preventable and a small flame can spread quickly near combustible material.
