Police are pursuing changes that would let investigators check location information and transit-card use in adult missing-person cases before evidence of a crime has emerged. Those tools are currently more restricted for adults, creating a gap during the early stage of a disappearance when time can matter most.
The reform package also proposes a metropolitan missing-person command organization and would consolidate policy and investigation functions under the National Office of Investigation. From September 7, supervisor approval is to be required before a missing-person case is closed.
The practical safety question
Police are also moving toward at least two officers for night and holiday response. The practical impact will depend on the final legal authority for data access and how consistently the new procedures are applied across regions.
