Yeungnam University Yeongcheon Hospital says it is struggling to keep its emergency room operating normally, raising concern about access to emergency care in the city. The issue was discussed at a September 8 meeting with all 12 Yeongcheon city council members and city health officials, where the hospital described the financial and staffing pressure on the service.
According to the hospital, emergency-room operations generate annual losses of several billion won, while recruiting emergency-medicine specialists has remained difficult despite months of hiring efforts. The hospital has kept a recruitment notice open for about five months. Those two pressures, staffing and recurring losses, are making the current operating model increasingly difficult to sustain.
No closure has been formally decided. The hospital has instead raised the possibility of a public-sector operating arrangement as local officials discuss how to preserve emergency coverage. The distinction matters for residents: the immediate issue is not an announced shutdown but whether Yeongcheon can find a financially and medically workable structure before the staffing shortage forces a more disruptive reduction in service.
