A rooftop fire at an unused building owned by LIG Nex1 in Gumi was contained in about 35 minutes on September 17, with no injuries reported. The North Gyeongsang Fire Department said the fire began at around 9:47 a.m. while a cooling tower was being removed from the roof of the building in the Gongdan-dong industrial area.
Investigators said sparks from the work spread to nearby material and started the fire. Workers stopped the job as soon as they noticed the flames, called 119 and evacuated people from the area. The company and contractor also followed their existing safety procedures during the initial response before firefighters completed the suppression operation.
The limited damage and absence of injuries make the incident notable mainly as a response case rather than a major industrial disaster. Hot work and demolition can create ignition risks even in buildings that are no longer in regular use, so rapid detection and evacuation are important controls. Fire authorities will still need to establish the detailed cause and whether any additional safety action is required.
