A participant in a marathon event at the Hapcheon county sports meet survived after collapsing with suspected cardiac arrest, according to the county. The incident occurred on September 14 on a road near the public stadium, where staff and police were already positioned to support the race and respond to emergencies.

A health-center emergency worker waiting with a support vehicle noticed the participant had lost consciousness and was not breathing normally. A police officer at the scene immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation while other public workers coordinated emergency care. The rapid response kept treatment moving during the minutes when cardiac-arrest survival is most sensitive to delay.

The rescue is a local incident, but it illustrates why organized events place medical staff and trained responders along routes rather than only at the finish area. Sudden cardiac arrest can occur without warning, and immediate CPR can be decisive before advanced treatment becomes available. Hapcheon cited the coordinated response of the police, health-center staff and other officials in describing the outcome.
