Internal police audits over unauthorized access to the KICS criminal-justice information system and leaks of investigation information are rising. Data submitted by the National Police Agency to lawmaker Seo Myung-ok showed 18 such audits in the first half of 2026, already above the 14 recorded during all of 2025. From April 2021 through June 2026, 171 audits covered these two types of conduct, including 93 cases involving leaked investigation information.

Dong-A Ilbo also reported that 118 of 147 completed audit cases ended without formal disciplinary action, putting the focus on what happens after misconduct is detected. The issue has practical consequences because police systems contain addresses, case records and other sensitive information. The report cited recent allegations involving an officer accused of passing personal information to an acquaintance, underscoring why access controls and disciplinary follow-through are under scrutiny.
