Busan police have referred a YouTuber to prosecutors over allegations that AI was used to create and distribute false videos about major Korean historical and disaster events. Police said the suspect operated two YouTube channels and produced the material to attract views and revenue.
The reported videos included false claims concerning the May 18 Democratic Uprising and the Itaewon disaster. Police are handling the case under telecommunications-related law and other provisions, while the allegations themselves remain subject to prosecutorial review and any later court proceedings.
Investigators also moved to freeze alleged proceeds connected to the activity. That step makes the case more than a content-moderation dispute because it links alleged false-information production to a financial-enforcement response.
The case may become a useful test of how existing Korean law is applied when generative AI is used to scale fabricated political or disaster-related material. The immediate next step is the prosecution's decision on whether and how to charge the case.
