South Korea welcomed 15.05 million international visitors from January through August, setting a new record for the period, according to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The total was 21.6% higher than during the same period last year.

August alone brought 2.25 million arrivals, up 23.3% year on year. The ministry says both the monthly figure and the eight-month cumulative total were the highest recorded in 30 years.

International visitors' tourism-related card spending reached 14.018 trillion won through August, up 48.5% from a year earlier and the highest level since the series began. That shows the rise is translating into spending as well as headcount.

Spending beyond the arrival count

The government attributes the growth partly to easier entry conditions and targeted overseas marketing. The continued international pull of Korean culture, shopping and travel experiences is also supporting demand.

The next question is distribution. Record national arrivals create a broader economic effect when spending reaches regional destinations, local accommodation and smaller tourism businesses rather than concentrating mainly in Seoul and a few established hubs.
