The number of South Korean nationals reported kidnapped or detained overseas rose about thirteenfold between 2022 and 2025, according to foreign ministry data submitted to the National Assembly. Most of the reported kidnapping and detention cases occurred in the Asia-Pacific region, with a sharp rise from 2024 linked in reporting to scam operations in Cambodia. The figures add pressure for stronger travel-risk warnings and consular protection in higher-risk destinations.
