South Korea’s revised Criminal Procedure Act has taken effect, removing prosecutors’ supplementary investigative authority and shifting more responsibility to police. Police convened investigative commanders nationwide on October 1 and said they would operate an emergency response system while the new process settles in, with victim protection as a priority.

Case delays, management of detained suspects and the police workload will be closely watched as the system moves from legislation to day-to-day practice.
