South Korea has added Dongducheon, a city in Gyeonggi Province, to its list of depopulation regions for the first time in five years. The designation followed a sharp decline in indicators including population, the share of young residents and the crude birth rate. Analysts linked the decline to development constraints tied to the U.S. military presence, long-unreturned base land and overlapping regulations applied to the capital region.
