The High-Level Radioactive Waste Management Commission plans to complete preliminary work for a disposal-site selection this year and begin a public call for candidate sites next year. South Korea has failed nine attempts over roughly 40 years, while temporary storage at nuclear power plants is expected to reach capacity from 2030.
The central test for the new process will be whether support measures can secure local residents’ consent, including incentives more substantial than those offered in earlier efforts.
