At an October 13 parliamentary health committee hearing, South Korea's food-and-drug regulator chief Oh Yoo-kyung said there should be a legal and safer pathway for medication abortion. According to MBC, she argued that people using medicines obtained through unlawful channels risk falling outside systems for medical oversight and adverse-event compensation.
The comments do not mean the drug Mifegyne is already authorized for sale. The regulator said it would review additional documentation submitted by the applicant and reiterated that procedures are being pursued toward a possible introduction in the first quarter of 2027. For patients, current legal availability and medical guidance should not be confused with a prospective approval timetable.
