South Korean financial authorities said customer information was exposed at 16 financial companies in a hacking incident spanning several parts of the financial sector. About 100,000 personal-information records were leaked, according to findings released on October 14 by the Financial Services Commission and the Financial Supervisory Service.

The findings were presented during the authorities' second emergency response meeting at the Government Complex Seoul. The review covered the broader financial industry and included the period surrounding the intrusion involving Shinhan Bank. The disclosed total refers to affected companies across the review, while the reported leakage figure counts records rather than confirmed individual victims.

The affected businesses were not limited to commercial banks. Authorities identified cases involving savings banks, mutual finance providers, credit-specialized financial businesses, electronic finance companies, online investment-linked finance businesses and virtual asset service providers. Reports also identified Saemaul Geumgo among the affected institutions and said a virtual asset provider had been confirmed as a victim for the first time.

Damage extends across financial sectors

The breadth of the affected sectors shows that the incident reached both traditional financial institutions and businesses operating in digital finance and virtual assets. Authorities characterized the episode as an artificial intelligence-related hacking incident, but the available findings do not specify the intrusion method used at each company or establish that every affected institution was breached in the same way.

The confirmed count of 16 companies and roughly 100,000 leaked records provides the clearest measure of the incident so far. Important unresolved issues include which categories of personal information were exposed, whether the records correspond to the same number of customers, and whether further financial companies will be added as the review continues.
