President Lee Jae Myung attended the memorial ceremony for the fourth anniversary of the Itaewon disaster in Gwanghwamun Square, marking the first time a sitting president has attended the event in person. He said the tragedy should have remained an ordinary day if the state had fulfilled its responsibilities and pledged to prevent deaths caused by state absence or neglect.
The government has extended the special investigation committee’s mandate until September next year, and Lee said the remaining facts must be established and translated into safety measures and recurrence prevention.
