A man in his 50s has been detained and indicted over two sexual assault cases from 2007 in Seoul’s Guro District and Bucheon’s Wonmi District, which had remained unsolved for 19 years. The breakthrough came during a July investigation into a missing woman at an officetel in Hwagok-dong, Seoul, when police collected DNA from every unit and matched a sample from one room to DNA linked to the old cases.

Police arrested the suspect on October 15, and prosecutors indicted him on October 29 on charges including home-invasion rape and rape causing injury. The missing woman was later found dead in the building’s mechanical parking tower, but authorities described her case and the old sexual assault cases as separate incidents.
