Only 93 of the 227 facilities managed by Incheon International Airport Corporation had verified seismic performance as of November 2026, leaving 134 without confirmation that they meet current earthquake-resistant design standards. Some of those facilities have gone more than 20 years without a seismic performance assessment.

A preliminary review by the Board of Audit and Inspection and the Korea Authority of Land and Infrastructure Safety examined 23 airport facilities completed more than 20 years ago. It found that 13 could face partial structural collapse or severe damage during earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 6.1 to 6.5.

The findings identify potential vulnerability rather than damage that has already occurred. They also do not establish that all 134 facilities lacking verified performance are unsafe. The preliminary results show that the 13 flagged facilities require detailed assessment to determine their condition and any necessary strengthening work.

Detailed assessments will determine reinforcement needs

Power Building B, completed in 2001, was among the facilities identified. Although it is classified in the highest importance grade because of its use and scale, the preliminary assessment found a risk of collapse in an earthquake of magnitude 6.1 or greater.

The airport corporation plans to complete detailed assessments of the 13 flagged facilities within 2026. It will then inspect the other facilities whose evaluations have been delayed, aiming to finish detailed seismic performance assessments for all 134 by 2030 and prepare facility-specific reinforcement plans based on the results.
