South Korea’s men’s basketball team begins the second round of 2027 FIBA World Cup Asian qualifying on August 28 with an away game against Lebanon, starting a window that could quickly define its qualification prospects. Korea then returns home to face Saudi Arabia in Suwon on August 31.
The format makes the opening games especially important because results from the first round carry forward. Korea competes in Group F with Lebanon, Japan, Qatar, China and Saudi Arabia. The top three teams in each second-round group qualify for the World Cup, while the better of the two fourth-place teams also advances. That leaves limited room to absorb losses.
Lee Hyun-jung returns when every result counts
Korea enters the window needing a response after disappointing exhibition results in Japan. The return of Lee Hyun-jung gives coach Nikolajs Mazurs another primary scoring option and more size on the perimeter. Ahn Young-jun is also back in the final 12-man roster, while captain Lee Seung-hyun and several KBL regulars remain part of the core.
Lebanon is the first test, and the schedule gives Korea little recovery time before the Saudi game three days later. Because the carried-over standings already matter, those matches can materially change Korea’s position before the remaining windows begin.
For Korean fans, the question is straightforward: the team has regained one of its most important offensive players, but now needs that personnel boost to translate into results immediately.
