Starter Kwak Do-hyun set the tone with 4 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit while striking out 11. The lone hit was also the only baserunner he permitted. Yoon Ye-sung and Han Gyu-min then combined for 2 1/3 scoreless innings to complete the shutout, while Korea's offense produced five hits and used six stolen bases to keep pressure on the Philippines.
Japan awaits in the title game
Korea will face Japan in the final at Taipei Dome on September 13 at 7:30 p.m. local time. Japan emerged as the other finalist after the remaining super-round results were settled. The matchup gives Korea a chance to finish the tournament unbeaten and reclaim the continental title eight years after its previous championship.
The semifinal-stage performance showed a team winning through pitching control and aggressive baserunning rather than relying on a large number of hits. That combination has been effective throughout the competition and leaves the pitching staff in a strong position for the final, although the championship game will present a much tougher opponent.
A title would give this age group an important regional benchmark against Japan, Chinese Taipei and the rest of Asia's leading youth programs. The immediate focus, however, is the final itself: Korea has already secured a medal and a 5-0 record, but the unbeaten run will only become a championship if it can beat Japan in the tournament's last game.
