LG Uplus, GS E&C and other partners are forming an alliance to develop standardized prefabricated modular data centers for artificial intelligence workloads. LG Uplus said it signed an agreement on September 4 with GS E&C, Xi C&A, Gansam Architects and D&O CM to work jointly on the model.
The approach, known as PMDC, moves major parts of data-center construction into factories before final assembly at the project site. Structural components, power systems and cooling equipment can be manufactured in advance, a method intended to shorten construction schedules and make quality more consistent than building every component entirely on site.
The group plans to develop a standard model suitable for a 100-megawatt hyperscale AI data center. It will study both new-site construction and conversions of existing buildings into AI data centers. LG Uplus is responsible for operating standards and technical requirements, while GS E&C will focus on building structure and construction methods.
Building AI capacity faster
The partnership reflects the pressure to build AI computing infrastructure faster as demand for data-center capacity grows. The next test is whether the alliance turns the standard design into an actual project and demonstrates that modular construction can deliver the promised gains in speed, repeatability and operating quality.
