Hanwha Ocean is presenting a 60MW floating data center concept at Gastech 2026 in Bangkok from September 14 to 17. The model, developed by the Korean shipbuilder, moves data-center infrastructure offshore in an effort to address three constraints that are becoming more important as computing demand grows: land availability, access to power and the cost of cooling dense server systems.

The concept uses the marine setting as part of the infrastructure rather than treating it simply as a location. Hanwha Ocean says the platform can use offshore power generation and seawater-based cooling, reducing reliance on large land sites and conventional cooling systems. The design is modular, allowing configurations to vary according to power source, server type and required capacity.

The 60MW concept has received approval in principle from classification society ABS, providing an external technical review of the basic design. That does not mean a commercial floating data center is already operating, but it gives Hanwha Ocean a more concrete platform to discuss with energy and data-center customers. Gastech will be the first public showcase of the model, making the response from potential partners an early test of whether shipbuilding expertise can become part of the fast-growing data-center infrastructure market.
