South Korea’s first dedicated food-robot research support center has opened in Pohang, giving companies and researchers a facility focused on automation for kitchens and food-service operations. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs held the opening ceremony on September 17 at the Pohang Convergence Technology Industrial District.
The center is the first completed facility in the ministry’s program to build research-support centers across ten food-tech fields. Food robotics combines artificial intelligence and mechanical systems for tasks such as frying, stir-frying, noodle preparation, beverage production, serving and hygiene management. The goal is to give companies access to testing and development infrastructure that individual firms may find expensive to build alone.
The opening matters because labor shortages and repetitive, high-temperature kitchen work are pushing restaurants and food manufacturers to look for automation that can operate safely and consistently. A research center does not guarantee rapid commercial adoption, but it can shorten testing cycles and help suppliers demonstrate systems under realistic conditions. The next measure of success will be how many companies use the facility and whether prototypes move into commercial kitchens.
