President Lee Jae Myung says South Korea plans to double semiconductor production capacity within five years while building artificial-intelligence supply chains designed to withstand external shocks. He announced the target at the Korea Investment Summit in New York.
Lee tied the plan to three large projects launched earlier this year to expand chip production and AI infrastructure. He also used the investment event to call for additional US investment in South Korea as the government seeks to scale the country's semiconductor and AI ecosystem.
What it means
The five-year production target sets a clear benchmark, but delivery will depend on factory construction, power and infrastructure capacity, investment and demand. Future project schedules and capital commitments will show how quickly the stated capacity goal becomes operating production.
