South Korea plans to expand the length of safety advisory text alerts from 90 to 157 Korean characters by the end of October. The Ministry of the Interior and Safety is also preparing a system to detect repeated messages before they are sent to the same area.
The changes follow a pilot introduced last October and are intended to make emergency instructions clearer while reducing unnecessary phone alerts. Residents will still receive cell-broadcast disaster notices, but those messages should contain more detail and fewer repetitions.
