Kakao introduced an artificial-intelligence assistant called Kanana Space at its annual if Kakao developer event on October 13. The presentation showed the company's ambition to make KakaoTalk more than a messaging application, with assistance for search, planning and, eventually, commerce and reservations.

According to Kyunghyang Shinmun, a limited private trial for selected users is expected in December. The company demonstrated how a familiar Kakao character could appear through gesture-based interaction. A preview is not a commitment that every demonstrated function will be accessible to all KakaoTalk users at launch.

From messaging to assistance

The bigger idea is that an assistant linked to a service used throughout daily life may prove more convenient than a separate chat window. Kakao discussed using preferences and purchase histories in the experience and separately showed a canvas-style AI environment. Those plans make permissions and personal-data handling central to its credibility.

The company acknowledged the need to contain unpredictable AI behavior. Once an assistant begins carrying out actions instead of merely answering questions, mistakes may affect orders, schedules or transactions. Explicit confirmation steps and limits on data access will matter as much as the conversational quality.

Kanana Space remains a preview rather than a public product. The December test should clarify what works in practice, which actions require confirmation and how transparently the system treats a user's information. Those details will determine whether Kakao's AI becomes a trusted tool rather than a novelty.
