The Gwangju-Jeonnam semiconductor cluster is targeting first mass production in June 2030, but schools to train production workers are still largely at the planning stage. The project is expected to require about 30,000 direct workers, while proposed measures include a semiconductor high school, restructuring 58 specialized high schools to train about 1,200 students annually, and a joint practical training center.
Mokpo Technical High School and Haenam Technical High School have been selected as new meister schools, while Suncheon Future Science High School and GIST are also preparing semiconductor-focused programs. If a three-year high school opens in the 2027 academic year, its first graduates would emerge in February 2030, leaving little time before the production target.
