Police officers responding to 112 emergency calls can now enter the communal entrances of more apartment buildings without waiting for residents to open the doors. The National Police Agency said the automatic-entry system was expanded nationwide on October 19 to cover about 2.55 million households, or 20.7% of the country’s 12.33 million apartment households.

Using a dedicated application on a work phone, an officer approaching within about three meters of a designated entrance triggers its automatic opening. The system is intended to reduce delays at communal doors and help preserve response time during urgent calls.
