A 6km predominantly downhill rail bike past four light-and-music tunnels, a rest stop, 2.5km train ride by the Bukhangang, then a free shuttle return

KORInform take

Gimyujeong's charm is how an obsolete railway became an enjoyable, tightly designed journey, but it is a timed three-stage trip, not an 8.5km free-form cycle route

Eight and a half kilometres, but not all by pedal

Gangchon Rail Park's Gimyujeong route is advertised as 8.5 kilometres, but visitors pedal only the first six. The final 2.5 kilometres are aboard a Romance Train; a free shuttle returns everyone to the start. It is a one-way three-stage railway outing, not a bicycle loop

The departure square sits beside Gimyujeong Station on the modern Gyeongchun Line. The old railway opened on 25 July 1939 as a private line between Seoul's Seongdong station and Chuncheon, carrying passengers through Gangchon for decades. Its operators changed and the line was later nationalised. When a new double-track electric route opened in 2010, older track sections lost their regular trains. Gangchon Rail Park began its Gimyujeong rail-bike course in August 2012. The old railway's curves, bridges and tunnels, once simply part of getting to Chuncheon, became the point of the journey

Four tunnels interrupt the landscape

At the Gimyujeong plaza a huge Book Wall and a cafรฉ mark the start. The route quickly becomes more playful than a simple countryside pedal. The operator names four themed tunnels: Pink Muhly, Bubble, Milky Way and Club. Pink Muhly is the name of a romantic tunnel theme, not confirmation that living grass grows under the concrete arch: the operator separately advertises real pink muhly planting at the outdoor Gimyujeong departure plaza in autumn. It does not specify whether the tunnel's flower effects use artificial foliage or lights alone, so a greenhouse-like display should not be expected. The Bubble Tunnel sends real floating bubbles across the track, with changing blue and green illumination along the concrete walls. The Milky Way Tunnel takes the opposite visual approach: scattered points of light run across the curved ceiling and walls like stars against a dark sky. In the Club Tunnel, music accompanies shifting coloured light. These are brief effects seen from a moving rail bike, not galleries where visitors stop to inspect installations. Between them are open stretches of fields, wooded slopes and glimpses toward the Bukhangang valley

Unlike a cycling trail with intersections and arbitrary stopping places, this is a scheduled single-track attraction. Groups occupy two- or four-seat rail bikes and move along the same direction. Most of the course is gently downhill, but pedalling and timing still require participation. The line's old railway geometry decides the views; riders cannot turn around to redo a favourite tunnel

Six kilometres from the start comes a midpoint rest stop, where the rail bikes end. A snack truck and photo kiosk make it the transition from active riding to the Romance Train. For the final 2.5 kilometres, passengers sit while the train follows the disused rail alignment near the Bukhangang. Staff then guide passengers from the train exit toward the free return-shuttle stop, signposted by blue lines on the ground

The return trip changes the booking

The Gimyujeong route should not be confused with Gangchon Rail Park's Gyeonggang course. The latter starts at a different railway station and returns on its own separate line, while Gimyujeong works through bike, train and shuttle. Reserving the wrong branch can leave visitors kilometres from the expected departure point

Prices are per whole bike, not per passenger. Three people must reserve a four-seater, and a group of five needs two vehicles. Fixed departure slots also make arrival time important. The operator's refund and change policies still apply in rain, and a missed departure may not be refundable

The park has a special three-person accessible companion bike for a wheelchair user and two companions. It requires telephone booking, and the accessible Romance Train has an electric lift at the intermediate stop. But the normal return shuttle cannot carry an unfolded wheelchair. That last connection must be planned independently with an alternative vehicle if needed; wheelchair access to the bike is not the same as a fully accessible round trip

Before you go

Gimyujeong Station on the Gyeongchun Line is a short walk from the boarding plaza. A Seoul train journey can therefore reach the start without a car. The operator's listed slots typically begin in the morning and continue through late afternoon, with limited additional departures on busy-season weekends

A booking covers the complete one-way bike-and-train course plus the return shuttle, but time is also needed for check-in, the midpoint transfer and the shuttle back. Sunglasses, a light layer and sensible footwear are useful for the alternating exposed tracks and cool tunnels

Hours
The Gimyujeong branch uses fixed departures: generally 09:00, 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 13:30, 14:30, 15:30, 16:30 and 17:30; a further 18:30 slot runs on eligible warmer-season weekends/holidays. Late departures and weather restrictions vary; book a specific slot
Admission
Operator prices per rail bike: two-seat โ‚ฉ40,000; four-seat โ‚ฉ56,000, including the Romance Train and free return shuttle. Groups of three must buy a four-seater. No-shows and last-minute weather-related cancellations follow the published refund schedule; booking date cannot simply be moved
Access
Gimyujeong rail-bike departure at 1383 Gimyujeong-ro, Chuncheon. This is a one-way route: 6km by rail bike, 2.5km by Romance Train and free shuttle to the starting plaza. A special wheelchair companion three-seater requires advance telephone reservation on 033-245-1000; the normal return shuttle cannot carry an unfolded wheelchair
Transit
Take the Gyeongchun Line to Gimyujeong Station and walk a few minutes to the Gimyujeong rail-bike plaza. After the course's Romance Train, follow the blue ground markings and staff signs to the free shuttle back; this is not the separate Gyeonggang rail-bike station
