KT&G Sangsangmadang Chuncheon occupies the former Chuncheon Children’s Hall, a 1980 Kim Swoo-geun building whose red-brick, wing-like form was retained when it reopened as an arts complex in 2014

Seen from above, the Art Center spreads into two roughly symmetrical wings and is often compared to a butterfly resting beside Uiamho Lake. Inside, the building keeps the compressed rooms, ramps, linked levels and irregular windows that made the original children’s facility distinctive. The reuse did not flatten those spaces into a neutral gallery box

The present program is deliberately mixed. Galleries and classrooms sit alongside a 200-seat music hall, live-production spaces and a large outdoor performance area facing the lake, while the neighboring Stay building extends the complex into lodging, rehearsal and longer creative residencies

The experience

Brick surfaces, split levels and unexpected changes in enclosure remain legible as visitors move between galleries, terraces and the lake-facing edge. The building’s current use depends on those inherited spaces rather than hiding them

That makes exhibitions and performances feel different from events in a purpose-built cultural center. A small gallery visit can move into a terrace or café without leaving the old Children’s Hall, while larger concerts shift either into the dedicated indoor hall or to the outdoor stage with Uiamho behind it

The second building changes the scale again. The Stay occupies the former Gangwon Sports Center and adds guest rooms, rehearsal rooms, seminar spaces and another gallery, so the site works both as a public venue and as a place where artists can remain for longer projects

History

The Children’s Hall was completed in May 1980 from a design by Kim Swoo-geun, one of the most influential architects of twentieth-century Korea. It became a familiar civic facility in Chuncheon but later spent years underused as the building aged and its original role weakened

By the early 2010s, the architectural value of the structure had become central to the argument for reuse. The exterior form was kept largely intact while the interior was adapted for galleries, performance and music production. The neighboring sports center was remodeled in parallel as accommodation and support space

KT&G Sangsangmadang Chuncheon opened on April 29, 2014. The conversion turned a declining civic complex into an active arts campus while preserving the basic geometry of the 1980 building. An opening exhibition documented both the Children’s Hall and the transformation itself, making the site’s previous life part of the new institution from the beginning

Before you go

The Art Center and Stay are separate buildings with different functions, so a short visit can remain focused on the galleries and architecture while performances, classes or overnight use involve other parts of the complex. The lakefront setting also connects easily to the surrounding Gongjicheon and Uiamho walking network
